School chess groups and campus chess 23

Much of the region’s junior chess happens in schools. These groups are listed apart because they are closed to outsiders: a working group belongs to its school’s pupils, and the university chess evening is for students and staff. Many of them appear in the results of the NRW school chess finals, played in Hamm in March 2025 and March 2026, and of the Cologne school chess city championship, which the Gymnasium Neue Sandkaul has hosted.

Some schools describe their groups themselves: the Kardinal-Frings-Gymnasium in Beuel meets on Tuesdays at lunchtime, the Michael-Ende-Grundschule listed a Monday afternoon group for the 2025-2026 school year, the Bodelschwinghschule runs two working groups and the Georg-Büchner-Gymnasium plays chess and Go together. Others are known from competitions, such as the Rhein-Sieg district winners from Siegburg, Hennef, Sankt Augustin, Königswinter, Wachtberg, Rheinbach and Troisdorf.
